Asadar, nu e niciodata prea tarziu sa fii in forma.
I discovered J on YouTube about a year ago and since then, I included her workouts in my weekly fitness routine. I was impressed to see J has two kids and that she is my age, which means she is very inspiring to me, not only with her workouts, but with her entire life style. I was so glad when J accepted to answer some questions for Liorisme! I hope you find J as inspiring and full of positive vibe, as I find it. Especially because, as you will see, J hasn’t been much of an athlete until her late 30’s. So, there is never too late to get FIT.
Liorisme: Draga J, imi poti spune cum erai cand erai copil? Erai la fel de activa si atunci? Faceai sport?
Dear J, could you please tell me how were you when you were a child? Were you active back then, were you into sports at that age?
J: In primul rand, multumesc mult pentru cuvintele tale!
In clasa a X-a, am castigat o bursa pentru un program de educatie in aer liber, unde puteai sa finalizezi clasa a X-a in doar o jumatate de an (program accelerat), iar in cealalta jumatate de an, puteai sa practici activitati afara, in aer liber.
First off, thank you so much for your kind words! It truly makes me so happy to hear that I have inspired you and played even a small part in your fitness and your happiness! That is truly why I do what I do. I am honored – thank you. When I was a child I was not all that sporty. I didn’t really play team sports because my parents were not that sporty and my mom was a single working mom and couldn’t drive me to practices, etc.. So I started off feeling well-behind by the time I was about 12 and team sports were available to me in school and I could take the initiative and do it on my own. Volleyball was my team sport of choice until I entered high school (8th grade) and they didn’t have a team. I was pretty decent even though I am short! In high school I was on the softball team for one season. I totally stunk at softball. In 10th grade I applied and earned a coveted spot in an outdoor education program, whereby you completed 10th grade in 1/2 the year (accelerated program) and then the other half of the school year you did outdoor education and activities, like 8 day wilderness hiking trips with a 50lb backpack, telemarking cross country skiing, rock climbing, kayaking etc.. We also had fitness tests and I always did great with the sit-ups and absolutely bombed the running. I couldn’t run more than a lap without having to stop! Unlike many of the personal trainers or fitness gurus out there, I was not a D1 Athlete. So, if I can become an athlete at 39, anyone can do it. It goes to show that you don’t have to a) be young or b) have been super active or an athlete before to become one now. I am really proud of that and I want other women (and men) to know that it can be done. You just need consistency, hard work, dedication…and more consistency. 🙂
How and when did you start to do sport on a daily basis?
In facultate, alergam ocazional ori mergeam la sala sau in drumetii. Deloc!
Beginning in my late teens I started “working out” but it was mostly cardio (steady state) and some very uninspired and light weights. In university I went for the occasional short run and gym workout or hike. This continued through my 20’s until my early 30’s when I started to ramp it up a bit but still nothing consistent. I would say I was “skinny fat” and sometimes a little on the plump side. I didn’t like exercise. At all. It wasn’t until about 33 years old, after my first baby was born, really started to be active on a consistent basis. Still not much change visually but I was a little more fit. Then after my 2nd baby, I really got consistent and in my late-30’s fell in love with exercise. It was born out of a desire to be healthy for my kids and to feel good inside and like the way I looked on the outside. I found exercise to be therapeutic to not only the aches and pains of my body but to my soul. When I discovered Tabata and other forms of HIIT I fell in love. I never got results with trainers and didn’t enjoy exercise under their programs so I made my own program and got results and really just fell in love with working out and how it made me feel. That’s how I decided to not go back to the corporate world, but instead earn my certification as a Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Later I also earned my Fitness Nutrition Specialization through NASM as well. Fitness and proper nutrition go hand-in hand for a healthy body.
Cum ti-a schimbat sportul corpul, viata?
What would you say is your most important achievement, since you started to do fitness? How sport changed your body, your life?
Apoi, fitness-ul mi-a transformat corpul.
I would say my most important personal achievement thus far has been changing my health and my happiness, and setting a good example for my children to live their lives healthfully. My most important professional achievement is definitely improving client’s health and their level of happiness with their life. It’s wonderful to see client’s outlook on life improve with each workout. Fitness has transformed my body. I was never overweight or plump but the change is dramatic…and happened in middle-age…after 2 kids. Fitness has also increased my level of happiness and ability to see joy in things and reduce stress.
Liorisme: Cand te antrenezi, iei in consederare si importanta nutritiei? In ce mod?
When training, do you consider the importance of nutrition? How?
J: Absolut! Cand nutritia potrivita si miscarea fizica lucreaza impreuna, asta obtii. 🙂
Absolutely, nutrition is a necessary part of the equation. You can’t out-run a poor diet. Not only will your visual results improve with proper nutrition, but your performance will improve and of course your internal health. At 42, for the past 2 years of physicals my cholesterol lipids are flagged for being so low! My doctor gives me high fives and is super impressed. That is fitness and proper nutrition at work. 🙂
Liorisme: Daca privesti in urma, ce ai face acum diferit?
What would you do differently now, if you look back?
J: O, absolut! Mi-as cauta drumul si m-as indragosti de sport mult mai devreme!
Oh, absolutely! I’d find my niche and fall in love so much sooner! If I had only known how good I could feel mentally and physically, I would have turfed the other trainers and gone rogue doing my own thing sooner. Also, as a parent, I insist and make time for my kids to be exposed to sports (and even fitness) at an early age. I don’t want them to feel like they have to play catch up to their peers, and I want to instill in them a love and respect for fitness and health.
Liorisme: Ce crezi despre ideea de “prea mult sport”? Cum stii cand iti stresezi corpul, punand prea multa presiune pe el? Si cum se poate preveni acest lucru?
What is your idea about “too much sport”? How do we know when we stress our body, by putting too much pressure on it? And how can we prevent that?
J: Extenuarea e o chestie foarte serioasa.
Exhaustion is a big one. Sometimes we don’t feel like going for a workout and during those times you have to push yourself to do it anyways and then you are always glad you did. But there are other times when you are have decreased motivation where otherwise you used to live and breath the gym. This can be an indication that you are over-exerting yourself and you need a change or to back it off a little. Other symptoms are total exhaustion, increased resting heart rate, extended muscle soreness past 72 hours, not sleeping well, depression, frequent illnesses, getting injured more often or irritating old injuries, and the dreaded plateau. If your progress has halted despite your best efforts, there is a chance that you are overtraining. It’s important for us to remember that rest and recovery are an important part of progress and good results.
Liorisme: Cum arata agenda ta zilnica de miscare?
How your day to day fitness agenda looks like?
It varies and I do try to change it up b/c for progress and good results it’s important to do so. Currently, typically I do a 4-day upper/lower body split with weight training (2 days legs, 2 days upper body). I typically do 1-2 days of spinning and 1-2 days full body HIIT (one of those is usually a filming day). I also amp up my weight training days with bursts of HIIT.
Liorisme: E dificl sa iti implici copiii in activitati legate de sport?
Is it difficult to involve your kids in sport activities? Today’s kids are quite lazy and it’s not easy to make them get away from the tv, smart phones and other similar gadgets, that keep them immobilized.
J: Cu siguranta! Fiul meu iubeste fotbalul si joaca si polo. Fetita mea are 7 ani, iar baietelul are 9.
Absolutely! My son loves soccer and also plays water polo. My daughter plays soccer a few months of the year and we are currently trying to find some other sport that she likes. She is 7 and he is 9.
Beside fitness, do you practice any other sports?
A couple of years ago I took up mountain biking but since I won’t ride the trails by myself I can go only with my hubby (none of my friends are interested). So we only go very rarely because it requires paying a babysitter. $$$. I do love it though b/c it combines my love of outdoors with my love of activity and it’s something different and difficult for me to learn and try to master.
Liorisme: Iei suplimente? De ce?
Do you take any supplements? Why?
Yes, I use probiotics for digestive health. I also use BPI Sports Whey Protein Powder. It’s the best I’ve ever tasted and packs quality protein. I am a BPI Ambassador and all my clients & followers get 20% off. I also use their BCAA’s, which I sip during my workouts. I especially like it on a morning I’m doing fasted cardio. I want to keep my muscle and instead have my body use fat for fuel. I do want to say that supplements are not necessary to get results or achieve higher fitness or health. They are just helpful. A healthy and varied diet will also get you there.
Why do you believe that for so many people it is so difficult to get out from their confort zone and start building a healthy life, based on sport and good food?
I think it’s because change is hard for people. Also I think it’s because building a healthy life is hard work. It also takes dedication to yourself and I think many people do not feel they are worth When I first really got series about making a change, I felt a mother’s guilt about taking time away to workout…but fortunately I was able to see that you cannot pour from an empty cup. So, at first what made it easier for me to stay consistent and go do it without as much guilt was to know that I was doing it for them. Then when I got more into it and progressed I realized that I am deserving of health too and it’s okay for Mommy to do it for herself. Not only is it okay – it’s necessary. And it’s important that kids and husbands see that too. I am very lucky to have a supportive spouse but I know not everyone has that, unfortunately.
Liorisme: Care exercitii fizice iti plac cel mai tare?
What exercises you enjoy most?
I love athletic functional HIIT workouts. I love strength training my lower body and I love shoulders, even though it’s tough with my injury…I just love the look of strong defined shoulders. Oh, I love abs too. Also, now that my shoulder is rehabbing I am back doing power yoga, which I also love.
Liorisme: Ai vreun “model” de inspiratie? Urmaresti pe cineva, in mod deosebit, pe Youtube?
Do you have any inspiring „models” for fitness? Do you follow someone in particular on Youtube Sport Channels?
J: La inceput, imi placea BodyRock. Vine cu informatii bune si are super exercitii.
Just before I really got into it, I liked Bodyrock. In fact it was the first fitness video I enjoyed. I just really liked Lisa Marie and the way she talked to you and it looked like she was actually working hard, unlike most of the others that it’s too easy or looks too scripted or polished. I also really like BJ Gaddour from Men’s Health. He’s got great info and very good exercises. Aside from that I don’t really follow anyone else. Really when I struck out on my own was when I got results. Which was wonderful b/c I was so frustrated before b/c I was working out consistently 4-5 days a week and not getting ANY results.
Liorisme: Ce pasiuni ai, in afara sportului?
What is your passion, other than sport?
J: Copiii si sotul meu. Ajutorul dat altor oameni si ideea de a aduce ceva pozitiv in aceasta lume.
My kids and my husband. Helping people and putting something positive into this world. The state of affairs makes me sad and so if I can do my own little bit of good then hopefully there will be a little ripple effect.
How did you get into yoga? I’ve seen some of your postures. You are amazing!
J: Multumesc!
Thank you! I just started doing it a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it! I had to stop for about a year due to my shoulder injury but as of a couple months ago I’m back at it and very happy to be! I feel that yoga should be for everyone. No yoga snobbery allowed on my watch! 🙂
What are the most common patterns that may hurt us, as regard to physical activity and food?
Thinking that you can workout regularly for 2 weeks after not being active at all and expect to be at your goal. People need to realize consistency is key. Likewise starving yourself or picking up the next diet fad is really counterproductive, not to mention very unhealthy. When I make a customized nutrition plan for someone, it’s not a “diet” in the traditional sense of the word, but rather in the real sense of the world. Diet – as in WHAT and how you eat, not as in many restrictions you are putting on yourself. A proper diet (way of eating) should be healthy and sustainable. Many of these quick fixes do give weight loss but at a high cost and they are not sustainable either. I have cleaned up my diet and have been eating healthfully for about 3 years now. Sustainable and I get results and don’t feel overly restricted. And as I mentioned my doctor is very pleased with my health & fitness statistics too!
What do you do for a living? I mean, how you make time for sport, considering you are a mum for 2. You know that most people excuse not to get into sports is the lack of time…
Se pot face cateva genuflexiuni in bucatarie, in timp ce pregatesti cina. Ori, cand copiii erau micuti, il puneam pe unul in carut, iar pe cel mai mic, in “baby carrier” in fata sau in spate si astfel porneam intr-o plimbare rapida, urcand si coborand cel mai abrupt deal pe care-l puteam gasi.
I am a personal trainer and fitness nutritionist. It can be tough to get time to workout but there is always a work around and always a way to find time to get exercise in. Whether that be waking up before the kids or doing it after they go to bed. Or doing squats in the kitchen while you make dinner. Everyone can carve out 15-30 mins of their day to move. It’s really a matter of priorities. Even two 15 min sessions if you can’t do a full 30 mins all at once. I’ve been known to run laps around my son’s soccer practice field to get my workout in. Or when the kids were younger, strapping one in the stroller and the younger one in the baby carrier on my front or back and going for a speed walk up and down the steepest hill I could find.
Liorisme: Stii cati oameni si-au schimbat vietile, datorita tie?
Do you know how many people changed their lives, thanks to you?
I don’t know that number, but I wish I did! I know of at least a few. It brings me immense joy, pride and honor to have done so.
Would you share with us some of your dreams and future plans?
Lumea aceasta are nevoie de incurajare!
I would really love to reach more people to be able to help them make a positive change in their live. It’s hard to get exposed as I don’t play the weird social media game of “like for likes” or buying followers or any of that disingenuous stuff. As such the search engines don’t expose you but I’m just going to keep helping people and hopefully they will spread the word. I started FitForceFX as a place for people to get quality workouts, be inspired to be healthy & fit, and to support each other. The world needs more encouragers! I would love for FitForceFX to be a place where people feel supported and encouraged not just by me, but by each other.
Ola
