Christine Salus. My fitness girl inspiration

Am “descoperit-o” pe Christine Salus in mai 2015. De atunci, antrenamentele ei de pe Youtube fac parte din rutina mea de fitness.  De ce îmi place Christine și exercitiile ei? Ei bine, din mai multe motive, dar, mai presus de toate, îmi place Christine pentru deschiderea și sinceritatea ei. Știu toate videoclipurile pe care le posteaza saptamanal, pe teme legate de nutriție, fitness, spiritualitate, FAQ sau despre experiențele prin care trece, de-a lungul drumului. Aproape că pot spune că o cunosc destul de bine, desi nu am întâlnit-o niciodata, decat virtual. 🙂 Oricum, dacă o urmaresti, vei intelege ce vreau să spun: este fireasca, foarte sincera cu privire la tot ce trăiește si poate sa recunoască cand “greseste” … ce pot sa mai spun? Nu mulți dintre noi au curajul de a fi atat de deschisi si gata sa admita, atunci cand ceva nu merge bine sau cand ceva trebuie schimbat. Am fost tare bucuroasa deci, cand Christine a acceptat să răspundă la câteva întrebări pentru Liorisme! Ea este, in mod clar, unul dintre “trainerii” mei favoriti de pe YouTube!

I “discovered” Christine Salus in May 2015. Since then, her workouts on Youtube are part of my fitness routine. Why do I like her and the work she does? Well, for many reasons, but, most of all, I like Christine for her openness and her sincerity. I know all her videos, either they are about nutrition, fitness, spirituality, FAQ or about the experiences she goes trough, along the way. I can almost say I know her quite well, although we have never met. Anyway, if you will follow her, you see what I mean: she is so natural, very honest about all that she experiences, admits when she was “wrong” about something…What can I say? Not many of us has the courage to be so opened and keen to recognize when something goes wrong or need to be changed. I was so glad when Christine accepted to answer some questions for Liorisme! She is clearealy one of my favorites „trainers” on YouTube!

Liorisme: Dragă Christine, ai putea sa-mi spui cum erai, când erai copil? Inca de atunci erai activa, implicata in sport?

Liorisme: Dear Christine, could you please tell me how were you when you were a child? Were you active back then, were you into sports at that age?

Christine: Nu am facut sport, cat am fost copil. Eram, de fapt, o fată destul de timida și lipsita de incredere in sine. La ora de sport, eram intotdeauna ultima optiune pe lista!

Christine:  I was not into sports as a child. I was actually a pretty shy and unconfident girl back then. In gym class I would always get picked last!

Liorisme: Cand ai inceput sa faci sport in mod regulat?

Liorisme: When did you start to do sport on a daily basis?

Christine: Am început să fac miscare în mod constant în 2010, când am decis să încerc a fac sport in grup, la o sala din apropiere. Am facut ore de spin, de aerobic etc. Incercasem si in trecut sa imi creez un set de exercitii fizice de rutină, dar nu am reusit sa ma tin de el, pană când am început sa practic sport in grup; abia atunci am început să ma bucur de fitness.

Christine:  I started working out consistently in 2010 when I decided to try doing some group exercise classes at my local gym. Classes like spin and step and aerobics etc. I had tried to create a regular exercise routine in the past, but it wasn’t until I tried group exercise classes that I actually started to enjoy fitness.

Liorisme:  When you started to be active, did you notice any change in your relationships? For example, how your family and friends reacted? Were they supportive?

Christine: Da, m-au sprijinit cu totii si, de fapt, mi-am facut noi prieteni la sala de fitness. Acum, cei mai multi prieteni pe care-i am sunt implicati si ei, in fitness, intr-un fel sau altul.

Christine: Yes, they were all very supportive, and actually I made a lot of new friends at the gym. Now most of my friends are involved in fitness in some way.

Liorisme: Cand ai inceput sa fii interesata si de aspectul nutritional? Cum ti-a schimbat viata faptul ca ai ales dieta vegana?

Liorisme: When and why did you start paying attention to nutritional aspect? How becoming a vegan changed your life?

Christine: Am fost intotdeauna interesata de sanatate si de nutritie, dar am devenit implicata mai serios in acest subiect abia in jurul varstei de 30 de ani. Faptul ca am decis sa devin vegan a fost una din cele mai bune decizii pe care le-am luat vreodata, atat pentru sanatatea, dar si pentru constiinta mea. 🙂

Christine:  I have always been interested in health and nutrition, but I didn’t get serious about it until I was about 30 years old. Becoming a vegan was one of the best decisions I ever made. Both for my health and for my conscience :).

img_1363Liorisme: In sport, ce crezi ca e mai important: pregatirea fizica sau cea mentala?

Liorisme: When training, what do you think is more important: the physical condition or the mental part?

Christine: Nu cred ca un aspect e mai important decat celalalt. Sunt importante amandoua, pentru motive diferite.

Christine:  I don’t think one is more important than the other. Both are important for different reasons.

Liorisme: Care ai spune ca e cea mai importanta realizare a ta, de cand faci fitness? Cum ti-a schimbat sportul viata?

Liorisme:  What would you say is your most important achievement, since you started to do fitness? How sport changed your body, your life?

mqdefaultChristine: Sportul m-a facut sa am mai multa incredere in corpul meu. Nu doar pentru felul in care arat, dar si pentru ce pot face din punct de vedere al rezistentei si fortei. In plus, simt ca disciplina pe care am capatat-o prin sport, s-a extins si in alte aspecte ale vietii mele.

Christine: Exercise gave me more confidence in my body. Not just for how I look, but my physical capabilities, like strength and endurance.  Also, I feel that having developed this discipline with fitness has translated to discipline in other areas of my life as well.

maxresdefault2Liorisme: Ai face ceva diferit acum, daca privesti in urma? Adica, de-a lungul drumului, ai facut greseli, in felul cum ai abordat fitness-ul? Daca da, care au fost consecintele? Au existat, de asemenea, greseli din punct de vedere nutritional?

Liorisme: What would you do differently now, if you look back? I mean, along the way, were there any mistakes you made when doing fitness? If yes, what were the consequences? What about from the nutritional point of view?

Christine: De fapt, nu “regret” nicio “greseala”, pe care am facut-o, pentru ca toate fac parte din procesul de invatare si sunt atat de pretioase; dincolo de asta, as spune ca da, pentru o lunga perioada de timp, am fost mult prea concentrata pe aspectul fizic, pe imaginea mea. Acest lucru a influentat tipul de exercitii pe care le faceam si, in acelasi timp, si ce alegeam sa mananc. Acum, nu ma mai restrictionez (spre exemplu, in ce priveste grasimile alimentare) si aleg sa fac exercitii care ma fac sa ma simt bine si nu cele care ma fac sa arat mai slaba.

Christine: I don’t really ‘regret’ and of my ‘mistakes’ because all learning experiences are so valuable, but I will say that, for some time I was too focused on my body image. This influenced the type of exercise I would do and the type of food I would eat. Now I do not restrict myself (for example, limiting fats), and do what feels good, not what will make me the ‘leanest.’

maxresdefault3Liorisme: Ce crezi despre ideea de “prea mult sport”? Cand stim ca punem prea multa presiune pe corpul nostru? Si cum prevenim asta?

Liorisme: What is your idea about “too much sport”? How do we know when we stress our body, by putting too much pressure on it? And how can we prevent that?

Christine:  Cand sportul devine ceva compulsiv (de exemplu, devii anxios si te simti vinovat daca intr-o zi nu te antrenezi), acesta e un semn ca exagerezi. Trebuie sa ne intrebam DE CE facem ceea ce facem. E bine sa fim atenti la ceea ce simtim. Daca suntem obositi tot timpul si miscarea fizica e ceva ce TREBUIE sa facem, in loc sa fie ceva ce NE DORIM sa facem, atunci ar trebui sa facem un pas in spate si sa reevaluam. Un semnal puternic pentru o femeie, ca exagereaza cu sportul, este cand aceasta nu mai are menstra. Acest lucru mi s-a intamplat si mie in trecut.

Christine:  When exercise becomes a compulsion (i.e. you get anxiety and feel guilty if you have to miss a day), that is when it has become too much. We must ask ourselves, WHY are we doing what we are doing.  We must pay attention to how we feel. If we are exhausted all the time and working out is something we MUST do, rather than something we GET to do, then we should take a step back and re-evaluate. A big sign that a woman, in particular is doing too much exercise, is that she will lose her period. This happened to me in the past.

Liorisme: Cum arata agenda ta de fitness in acest moment? Dar cea legata de nutritie? Stiu ca vreme indelungata ai mancat doar mancare cruda…

Liorisme: How your fitness agenda looks now? What about your nutrition? I know that for quite a time you were eating only raw food…

christine-salus-fruitChristine: Momentan, ridic greutati de 3-4 ori/saptamana si fac exericitii de tip HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) de 1-2 ori pe saptamana. In dieta mea inca se regasesc o multime de alimente crude, dar mananc si ceva mancare gatita, zilnic. In fiecare zi am un bol cu smoothie, iar la cina mananc, de obicei, legume la abur cu fasole si linte sau ceva orez, tahini ori avocado.

Christine: Currently I am lifting weights 3-4 times per week and doing HIIT 1-2 times per week. My diet still has a lot of raw food, but I do eat some cooked foods every day. I have a smoothie bowl every single day, and for dinner I usually have some steamed vegetables with sprouted beans and lentils and rice and some tahini or an avocado.

Liorisme: Esti canadianca. E vreun loc in lume, unde ti-ar placea sa te muti si sa traiesti?

Liorisme: You are Canadian. Is there any other place that would you like to move to and live your life?

Christine: Mi-ar placea foarte tare sa ma mut permanent in Hawaii. Daca as fi fost cetatean american, as fi fost deja acolo. 🙂

Christine: I would love to live in Hawaii permanently. If I was a US citizen, I would be there already. 🙂

Liorisme: Stiu ca ai decis, acum ceva vreme, sa renunti la jobul tau. Cu ce te ocupai? Veniturile obtinute din canalul tau Youtube iti acopera nevoile?

Liorisme: I also know you decided to quite your job some time ago. What were you doing before, as a living? Are now your Youtube Channel earnings covering your needs?

Christine: Am fost dentist, inainte, si castigam mai bine decat acum. In orice caz, ma bucur atat de tare de timpul si de libertatea mea, incat eu cred ca merita.

Christine: While I was working as a dental hygienist, I was making a higher income than I am now. However, I value my time and freedom so much, that to me it is worth it.

Liorisme: In afara de fitness, practici si alt sport?

Liorisme: Besides fitness, do you practice any other sports?

Christine: Nu, momentan.

Christine: Not at the moment.

Liorisme: Iei suplimente? De ce?

Liorisme: Do you take any supplements? Why?

Christine: Iau vitamin D, pentru ca traiesc intr-un climat nordic; mai folsoesc magneziu pentru un somn bun si fier, pentru ca dintotdeauna am avut carenta (chiar si inainte de a deveni vegan).

Christine: I take vitamin D because I live in a northern climate, magnesium to help me sleep and iron because I am always deficient in it (I was deficient before I became vegan as well).

Liorisme: De ce crezi ca pentru multi oameni este atat de dificil sa iasa din zona lor de confort si sa traiasca o viata mai buna, bazata pe sport si mancare de calitate?

Liorisme: Why do you believe that for many people it is so difficult to get out from their confort zone and start building a healthy life, based on sport and good food?

Christine: Nu sunt foarte sigura. Cred ca unii oameni nu au informatia necesara. Poate ca nu au pe nimeni in viata lor, care sa fie preocupat de sanatate si de fitness…poate fi dificil sa incepi un nou mod de viata, cand toata lumea din jur duce o viata nesanatoasa. De asemenea, mai cred ca sunt oameni care nu inteleg importanta unei alimentatii corecte. Iar unii oameni se simt intimidati de ideea de a merge la sala de sport. Nu stiu de unde sa apuce problema. De aceea, e de mare ajutor sa iti faci prieteni, fie virtuali, fie in viata reala, care sunt dedicati unui mod de viata sanatos.

Christine: I’m not really sure. I think some people just lack the knowledge. Maybe they don’t have anyone in their life who is also into health and fitness…it can be difficult to start a new lifestyle when everyone else in your life is still living an unhealthy lifestyle. And I think that some also just don’t understand the importance of proper nutrition. I think some people feel intimidated by the idea of going to the gym. They don’t know where to start. That’s why it really helps to make friends, either online or in real life, with people who are also committed to a healthy lifestyle.

Liorisme: Ce tip de exercitii fizice iti plac cel mai mult?

Liorisme: What are the excercices that you enjoy most?

Christine: Burpees!!! Ha ha, glumesc! De fapt, nu chiar. Cel mai tare imi plac exercitiile de tip HIIT; imi mai place sa ridic greutati si sa merg cu bicicleta. 

Christine: Burpees!!! Ha ha, just kidding. Well, not really. My 3 favorite activities are HIIT, weight lifting and going for bike rides.

maxresdefault10Liorisme: Ai vreun “model” care te inspira? Urmaresti pe cineva in mod special, pe canalele Youtube, de sport?

Liorisme: Do you have any inspiring „models” for fitness? Do you follow someone in particular on YouTube Sport Channels?

Christine: In acest moment, ma bucur sa invat mai multe despre ridicarea de greutati si de aceea urmaresc in mod regulat trei canale Youtube, pentru a ma inspira: Nicki Blacketter, Heidi Sommers si Robin Gallant.

Christine: Right now I am enjoying learning more about weight lifting, so there are three channels that I watch regularly to get inspiration: Nicki Blacketter, Heidi Sommers, and Robin Gallant.

Liorisme: Poti spune ca fitness-ul este pasiunea ta? De ce?

Liorisme: Would you say that fitness is your passion? Why?

Christine: Da, am o pasiune uriasa pentru fitness! Pur si simplu e ceva ce ma face sa ma simt bine. 🙂

Christine: Yes, fitness is a huge passion for me! It just makes me feel good. 🙂

christineLiorisme: Poti spune despre tine ca esti o persoana spirituala? Ce inseamna sa fii spiritual?

Liorisme: Would you say you are a spiritual person? What does it mean for you to be spiritual?

Christine: Cu siguranta sunt o persoana spirituala. Reflectez mult la subiecte ce tin de metafizica, viata dupa moarte, scopul vietii etc. Pentru mine, a fi spiritual inseamna mai ales a-ti pune intrebari legate de viata si de realitate si a vedea unde te conduc aceste intrebari. 

Christine: Absolutely I am a spiritual person. I ponder a lot about metaphysical topics and life after death, the meaning of life etc. For me, to be spiritual basically  just means to question life and reality, and to see where those questions lead us.

Liorisme: Care crezi ca sunt cele mai obisnuite tipare, care ne pot face rau, cand vine vorba de activitate fizica si de mancare?

Liorisme: What do you think are the most common patterns that may hurt us, as regard to physical activity and food?

Christine: Incercarea de a obtine rezultate prea rapid. Multi oameni tin diete drastice sau fac sport intr-un mod extenuant, pentru ca isi doresc sa piarda in greutate foarte rapid. Asta duce intotdeauna la accidentari, la recastigarea greutatii si la obiceiuri total nesanatoase. Progresul lin functioneaza cel mai bine, ca sa slabesti pe termen lung si pentru mentinerea unui program de fitness.

Christine: Trying to see results too quickly. A lot of people do crash diets or go on crazy exercise programs because they want to lose weight really quickly.  This always leads to burnout and regaining of weight and unhealthy eating patterns.  Slow and steady progress is the best for long term weight loss and fitness.

maxresdefaultLiorisme: Motivatia ta s-a schimbat de-a lungul anilor, in ce priveste fitness-ul si alimentatia vegana?

Liorisme: Did your motivation change, over the years, for doing fitness and for being vegan?

Christine: La inceput, motivatia mea in a face sport a fost legata de a ma simti sanatoasa, dar acum incerc mai mult; incerc sa arat ca se poate construi masa musculara, ca poti fi suplu si sanatos, cu o alimentatie vegana. Pe scurt, imi doresc ca, prin ceea ce fac, sa promovez veganismul.

Christine: In the beginning my reason for doing fitness was mostly just to feel healthy, but now I really am trying to show that a person can build muscle and be really fit and healthy on a vegan diet. Basically, I want to use my body to promote veganism.

hqdefaultLiorisme: Ai idee cati oameni si-au schimbat viata, multumita tie?

Liorisme: Do you know how many people changed their lives, thanks to you?

Christine: Primesc regulat multe email-uri, in care oamenii imi multumesc pentru filmuletele mele de pe Youtube. De fiecare data ma simt tare, tare fericita cand cineva imi spune ca se simte mai puternic si mai sanatos si datorita mie sau cand cineva imi scrie ca a devenit vegan. Asta e ceea ce imi doresc: ca toti oamenii sa se simta bine in pielea lor si ca toata lumea sa devina vegana! (stiu ca asta nu se va intampla, dar e visul meu):-)

Christine: I receive emails pretty regularly thanking me for my videos. I always feel so, so happy when someone tells me that they feel stronger and healthier because of me, or when someone tells me they have gone vegan. That’s what I want: for everyone to feel good in their bodies, and for everyone to go vegan! (I know not everyone will go vegan, but it’s my dream 😛 )

Liorisme: Ne poti impartasi cateva din visele tale de viitor?

Liorisme: Would you share with us some of you dreams and future plans?

Christine: Mi-ar placea mult sa am o sala de sport, a mea, aici, in Victoria, impreuna cu prietena mea, Denise. Va mai dura cativa ani, dar e un vis pe care il avem amandoua. Si mi-ar mai placea sa fiu gazda pentru centre de sanatate, candva, in viitor.

Christine: I would love to have a gym space of my own here in Victoria with my partner Denise. It’s still a few years away but it is a dream for both of us. I would also like to start hosting retreats at some point in the future.
